THE CHAMBER CORNER

Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t Know” ….

When was the last time you answered an associate’s tough question
or challenge with an unvarnished “I don’t know”? For many
people in positions of authority, ‘ I don’t know” may well be the
three most frightening words in the universe. That’s not surprising.
In today’s complex world, expertise is so central to credibility.

But so is honesty. And there’s nothing more honest than saying
“I don’t know.” Admitting ignorance can increase your employee’
respect for you rather than undermine it.

Saying you don’t know builds your credibility in several ways.

1– Everyone you work with knows that nobody—not even the
smartest boss can know it all. We all suspect know-it-alls are
phony.

2– Declaring your uncertainty show your self-confidence. Everyone
knows it takes courage to admit ignorance publicly.

3-Candor about not knowing shows a commitment to quality.
When you proclaim ignorance, you declare allegiance to truth,
knowledge and accuracy.

At a time when exaggeration, overstatement and spin have risen
to an art form, people respect even warmly embrace simply the
truth.

You might be tempted to reply “I don’t know”...to questions
about confidential information. Example: Is the company going
to lay off some employees soon?” If you know the answer and
say you don’t, your reply is dishonest. Better to say “I’ll provide
you with information about that just as soon as I’m able to do
so.” By Don Blohowiak
